my client doesn't know what font was used for her logo. Do you know what this font is, or any fonts that are similar?

Font Managers

Just thought to ask, what do people here use for typeface manager utilities? I've worked with Adobe ATM, of course, but can't really justify a commercial typeface management system on my home systems; so that one took a little more searching. Currently, I'm using a program called "The Font Thing," a freeware font manager that I find works pretty well, but was wondering if people here had stumbled across anything better.

I *love* fonts, but I know absolutely nothing about creating them, so please excuse my ignorance. I read something where someone said they hand drew a font and then scanned it in? How does that work, exactly? How does it go from an image file to being a font? What program does that require?

And, so this wasn't a total waste of your time, here is one of my favorite fonts (and it's free!):

http://www.robertlundahl.com/Logo-FCF.jpg

the font in the word French
and the font in the word CONNECTION

it appears to me that they may be different.

The closest I could come was Kabel, but the 'C' doesn't match

Unfortunately this is the only version of the logo I have

Cheers

I posted this in my tribe Small 6 Degree World, but I figured you might get a chuckle out of this story.

In April of 96 there was a typographic symposium in Toronto with lots of big names that I very much wanted to meet and hear. The cost was out of my reach (being a type designer will do that) and much to my regret I couldn’t attend.

The shindig was on a Friday and Saturday. I consoled myself by going out to a rave on Saturday night, and ended up having a phenomenal time. The next day I went out for lunch on Queen Street with my friend Jean-Michel from France. As we left the restaurant, we hadn't walked more than two dozen paces, when I passed some men speaking Dutch. I figured they were just tourists and kept on walking. A few paces on however I realized that I recognized one of them. "Wait here" I said to my companion and ran back.

"Excuse me, but are you Gerard Unger?" I asked in Dutch.
"Yes I am," he said with a rather surprised look on his face.
"Hey, and you’re Just van Rossum and you’re Erik van Blokland."

I introduced myself, explained who I was and what I did. We proceeded to stand there and chat for several minutes, I showed them what I did, and we exchanged cards.

"Yes Paul Sych was telling me all about you. Well if I had known about you before hand I would have snuck you into the conference," Gerard Unger said, much to my chagrin of course.

But I must say that I had a hearty laugh at getting to meet the three people at the symposium I most wanted to meet, completely by chance. If I had left the restaurant thirty seconds later, I would have missed them. The other amusing thing is that Just and Erik were both born around the same time as me (Just in 1966 and Erik in 1967) are both as tall as me (2 meters), they’re Dutch and they design type.

They inquired where a good place to eat would be, and after discussing the many possibilities, I pointed out the direction to a good Indian restaurant. This happened to be in the direction where my neglected friend was. He had waited patiently for me this whole time. I introduced everyone and Gerard Unger, being a very personable man (I think avuncular would be a good term to describe him) asked Jean Michel what he did.
"I’m a DJ," he replied.
"Ah, my son is a DJ in Amsterdam."
"I know several DJs from there. I actually played a record last night by two guys from Amsterdam, Remy and Sven from Global Cuts."
"Ah yes, Remy is my son and Sven is my nephew."

My brain was pretty much reeling at this point! One strange small world incident was followed by another in rapid succession.

A while later I got a call from Joe Clark, a writer who specializes in design.
"Hey I hear you accosted Gerard Unger on the street."
"Yeah. How did you know?"
"David Michaelides from FontShop told me."
"And how did he know?"
"They told David because they were utterly flabbergasted that someone in Toronto not only recognized them, but knew who they were, and could speak to them in their native tongue."

The next day I was on the phone with Patric from Thirstype.
"So I hear you bumped into the Dutch boys on the street."
"Yeah how did you know?"
"Just told me. He thought it was hilarious that you knew who they were, and went up to say hello. He said it made him feel like a famous rock star."

But it gets even weirder. FontShop published sheets with bios and small portfolios of notable type designers. Gerard Unger was one of them. It made mention how he got his start at a very famous Dutch ad agency Total, run by esteemed typographer Wim Crouwel. I showed this sheet to my mom for her to get a sense of who I had met.
"Oh I know Wim Crouwel," my mom says.
"Huh?! Are you sure?"
"Yes your dad used to play baseball with him." (My father was a really good pitcher and played on the Dutch national team in the 50s and early 60s.) "Yes I'm certain of it, Wim Crouwel, he ran an advertising agency. He was a catcher."
"So let me get this straight. My dad used to lob baseballs at the head of a luminary in the world of typography. Wow."

There is a free font called Strokes available for download from their website (http://www.neo2.es/downloads/marzo05/strokes.html), but you need the code printed in the March '05 issue (#41). Can you help?

HELP I NEED A FONT!

I'm looking to match a font that a previous designer had used on a business card. Doing some work for a friend and he can't seem to find any info on the fonts fronm the original designer.

The font I'm looking for has a Latino or Spanish flare to it.

There is a picture of the business card in my profile, it says "Tabu" on it.

I need to find a font like this ASAP!

Thanks in advance!-

When I switched form Win 98 SE to WIN XP this year
(for my home recording studio's sake) I noticed that many
of the Pagemaker and Photoshop documents that I had once
made are now missing fonts.

I did some really cool LOGO design for my L()()p.p()()L
project and now my computer wants to substitute COURIER for everything missing. I"m so bummmed. I looked around on the web but can't find these fonts (at least not for free).

Does anyone have MYRIAD ROMAN and PEPITO MT?

Additionally, does anyone have the full set of Win 98 SE fonts
that they would be willing to send me on a CD.

I'd be more than happy to send a CD of my own music (which sell really well, by the way: I toured as a headliner in 10 countries in the last 12 months) as a way of saying thanks.

Please respond to this off tribe if you do by writing me at
rickwalker@looppool.info.

Thank you very much for reading this queery.

LogoLounge

I am a member of LogoLounge and find it infinitely useful. I have submitted close to 30 logos for this call for entries. I have the book and it is great! Maybe some of my stuff will make it into LogoLounge 2...

check it out

--------
CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR LOGOLOUNGE BOOK II

Dear LogoLounge Member,
When the new book, "LogoLounge: 2,000 International Identities by Leading Designers," compiled by the creators of LogoLounge.com and published by Rockport Publishers, was released earlier this year, there was just one thing wrong with it: The book sold out in a matter of months. The second printing is quickly being exhausted and the book has yet to drop from the top 1% of sales on Amazon.com.

So Rockport and LogoLounge.com are teaming up again to publish a brand-new book, "LogoLounge II." That means it is once again your chance, as a LogoLounge member, to get your logo design work into what has turned out to be a very hot commodity.

Here's what you need to know and do:
— Make sure your membership in LogoLounge.com is current. Only members may upload their logo design work to the web site.
— All work submitted to LogoLounge.com before February 1, 2004 will be considered for inclusion in the new book.
- We are announcing this CALL FOR ENTRIES to our membership before it is announced to the general public. When the jurors review the logos they are judged in the order they are received. You may find it advantageous to upload soon to avoid having your work at the bottom of the virtual stack.

Your membership not only opens up the possibility that your work may be featured in "LogoLounge II," it also means that your designs will be part of the fastest-growing databases and historical record of logo design in our time. You also have access to all of the web site's research capabilities, its editorial content, and its special promotions.

Of course, being featured in the book is a powerful promotion for your work: Clients have heavily shopped the book to discover designers and firms with whom they would like to work.

Work on the new book is beginning as you read this message. So please don't wait: Unlike a web site, the book can only contain a finite number of logos.

An absolutely beautiful, and unapologetic bookface from a book designer of some reknown. Mmm...

Only complaint? It's not available in OpenType.

*sigh*
