Can you edit fonts?

topic posted Wed, February 25, 2004 - 11:35 AM by  offlineMiamiAstrology
I have a font, Panther, that I would like to edit. I want the lines of the letters d, h, l, b, k, etc to be longer (higher). Is there a way or a program that let's one edit fonts?

If you get one of the typical fontmaking utilities like Fontographer, you can manipulate the points of the various glyphs and then re-output the font files. Good luck!

I got Font Lab, and changed the ascenders; but when I output the font the ones I changed are shortened when placed next to the letters that weren't changed....?
Do I need to change the ascenders on all letters ??

I don't know Font Lab. Do the glyphs you changed look like they were squooshed back into their old dimensions? Or do they look like they were never changed?

They looked like they were squashed down.
For instance, I want tall ascenders on the b, d, h, k, and l. Like three times as tall (think of the dunhill cologne font).
So I went into Font Lab, pull up the ascenders (is that the right term?) on those letter, and pulled up the marker line (labeled "a") that ran across the window. Exported the font. but when I use it, like if I type "dr" the d is squished down so that the top of it is the same as the r.
          *sigh*

I will send it to you....check out this layout:
              www.softerware.net/bonlie/layout1.gif

I futzed with the font in Fireworks by manually drawing the lines taller just so I could see it as I wanted it.
The only thing about that is that it's not a real font (I cant resize those words or it'll f'up)...

I will send the font to you.

              Thanks-
              Ron

                Good lookin' font!

Sounds like FL is enforcing your EM height. Do you have a box where you can resize your ascent and descent?

Well....I just went into Font Lab and under the general prefs for the font changed the ascenders to 1502...which I thought that I had done before...but here's what I just did...

I had been trying to use the font in Fireworks (which is macromedia's version of photoshop) and it wouldnt' work....but just now, I tried it in Word and it worked as expected (i.e. the ascenders were very tall).....

so, not being an expert in font lab, I'm guessing that maybe fireworks handles fonts differently...

                  hmmph...
