Fri, January 6, 2006 - 12:55 AMIt used to be a letter in Old English, named “ash” because the initial sound of that word was written with it, among other words. In Old English the “sh” sound was usually written “sc”, so you have “æsc”.
It's still a separate letter in Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese, among other languages.
